Congratulations to the newly elected President of the Republic of Estonia, Ülle Madise
The Riigikogu elected Ülle Madise, who will become the sixth head of state since the restoration of Estonia’s independence
On 2 September the Riigikogu elected Ülle Madise as the new President of the Republic of Estonia. In a secret ballot her candidacy was supported by 71 members of parliament, with 68 votes required for election.
Ülle Madise will become the sixth head of state since Estonia restored its independence in 1991 and the second woman to hold the office of president. Before her election she served as Estonia’s Chancellor of Justice.
In her speech the president-elect spoke at length about trust, responsibility and the strength of Estonian society, and stressed Estonia’s special role in the security of Europe and the whole free world.
“I am confident that together we are able to make Estonia bigger, happier and stronger,” Ülle Madise said, accepting the decision of parliament.
For the Ukrainian community, Estonia has for many years been not only the country where we live, work, raise our children and preserve our Ukrainian identity. It is a state that, in Ukraine’s hardest time, since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, has become one of our most loyal friends and consistent allies.
The Association of Ukrainian Organisations in Estonia sincerely values the support that Estonia and Estonian society give to Ukraine and Ukrainians, and for its part will continue working to develop Ukrainian-Estonian ties, cultural and people’s diplomacy, and mutual understanding between our peoples.
We warmly congratulate Ms Ülle Madise on her election to the highest office of state and wish her wisdom, strength and success in serving the Republic of Estonia.
We sincerely hope that under the presidency of Ülle Madise Estonia will remain one of Ukraine’s most loyal friends, and that the consistent and unwavering support for our country shown by Estonia’s leadership and its people throughout these years will remain unchanged.
We believe that the Ukrainian-Estonian partnership will keep growing stronger and the friendship between our peoples will develop — for a shared future in a free, peaceful and secure Europe.
Congratulations, Madam President!
Long live Estonia!
